Runners take off during the Unicorn Fun Run.
MIRI: Some 5,000 running enthusiasts from all walks of life converged on Marina Parkcity and transformed the event ground into a sea of pink for the Unicorn Fun Run.
Wearing pink T-shirts with the words ‘Dream like a Unicorn’ emblazoned in the back, the energetic and jovial participants arrived from as early as 6am for the 5km fun run.
Jointly organised by Bulatan Park Runners Club and JomRun, the inaugural event aimed to bring people together through sports as well as to promote a healthy lifestyle among Malaysians.
Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who flagged off the participants at 6.30am, said he was very impressed with the large turnout for the event.
“Running events are very popular in Miri, as almost every month there would be at least one of such events being organised here. Although some of the runs require participants to pay to run, there would still be big crowds participating.
“Running comes with countless benefits, especially in terms of health, and this proves that Mirians really do take care of their health,” he said when met.
Lee hoped that more similar activities will be organised for the people in Miri in the near future.
“I would like to suggest to the organisers in Miri to organise international runs. This would attract more international participants to come and take part, and this will also boost the tourism sector here.”
Though held for the first time in Miri, the Unicorn Fun Run series has been organised since July this year with similar events being held at over 30 different locations around Malaysia including Kuching in Sarawak. These past events had attracted at least 5,000 runners each – resulting to over 150,000 participants nationwide.
The finale event will be held at Dataran Putrajaya on March 15 next year.
