MIRI: The Swift Wildlife Action Team (SWAT) of Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) removed a 4.4- metre male crocodile from the waters of Sungai Kelulit in Bekenu near here, on Thursday. “Responding to recent reports of crocodile sightings by residents of Kampung Pejuang, the SWAT from our Miri Regional Office was dispatched to the location on 7 December, 2016 to catch the crocodile.
The adult crocodile took the bait on Thursday afternoon and was thereafter transferred to Benaya Crocodile Farm,” said SFC in a statement yesterday. Meanwhile, SFC expressed concern over the shooting of two crocodiles measuring r 4.3-metre and 1.0-metre in length respectively by the villagers on 4 December 2016.
“The villagers had taken matters into their own hands, citing the protection of their poultry as justification. Since crocodiles are listed as protected species under the Wild Life Protection Ordinance, 1998, we would strongly urge the public to report sightings of rogue and nuisance crocodiles to the Forest Department or SFC office,” said the statement.
