MIRI: A total of 109 Penan youths from Sungai Layun and Melanah regions in Telang Usan constituency have applied to join the Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas).
The youths are from four longhouses — Long Latei, Long Jenalong, Long Kevuk, and Long Liwok.
A pro tem committee has been set up with Lawai Marcus of Long Latei as pro tem chairman.
According to him, the Penan youths have come to realise the importance of joining the state-level association following their extensive engagement with other communities.
“We are also convinced that Saberkas is the right association to join because it is for all races or ethnic groups in Sarawak and it does not look at one’s ethnic or religious background.
“We want to learn from other more progressive communities in the state, and furthermore we want to get involved in many activities where our people’s representative is heavily involved,” he said before handing over membership forms to Saberkas Telang Usan chairman Dennis Ngau recently.
Lawai said they looked forward to Saberkas organising more activities for youths, especially at Penan villages.
Dennis, who is Telang Usan assemblyman, said he hoped Penan youths in other areas such as Patah-Abang, Ulu Tinjar would also join Saberkas.
“I can assure that the Penan Saberkas members will certainly be provided with a wide range of opportunities, especially in digital economy as envisioned by our Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is also the immediate past president of Saberkas,” he added.
