10,000 expected for state-level FitMalaysia

MIRI: Some 10,000 people are expected to take part in activities lined up for this year’s state-level FitMalaysia programme, scheduled to take place at Miri City Council (MCC) field on March 13.

Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the event was the second series after the maiden kick-off at Padang Merdeka in Kuching on April 12 last year.

“The first FitMalaysia series in Kuching last year was very successful, having attracted more than 20,000 people.

“For the similar programme in Miri, we have set a target turnout of 10,000 people,” he told the media after chairing the FitMalaysia 2016 organising committee meeting at the Resident’s Office here on Friday.

According to Lee, who is Senadin assemblyman, FitMalaysia is a national movement aimed at pushing Malaysia from being a ‘Sports-Loving Nation’ to becoming a ‘Sports Nation’.

“The approach is to change people’s lifestyle. The general perception is that only athletes have to keep their body fit and healthy. However, such perception is no longer relevant in today’s modern living as

many are aware of the importance to practise healthy lifestyle, which would help keep various illnesses and health issues at bay.

“Apart from focusing on healthy lifestyle, FitMalaysia also inspires the people indirectly to hold more community-centric recreational activities, such as cycling, running and walking with their friends and family members.”

On the programme, Lee said the main events for the day would be the FitMalaysia Ride (30km and 10km) and FitMalaysia Run (5km and 10km) — all with free admission.

Those interested to join the cycling and running events can obtain forms from Miri Resident’s Office, Miri Division Youth and Sports Office, as well as the district offices here, in Subis and Marudi.

The form is also downloadable via www.rjevents.com.my.

Additionally, there will also be other activities throughout the day such as ‘Fitness Zone’, sports and health exhibition, booths selling health food and beverages, as well as the sale of FitMalaysia merchandise items.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem has been invited to officiate at the opening ceremony, which is also expected to host federal Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin as grand guest-of-honor.
