42'c is really very good already,
u should only start to worry when ur gpu temp reach above 70'c ,
my 3850 runs on 45'c idle, and during load is 62'c .
of course, to maximize cooling efficiency, a good casing with good airflow should be used, adding fans will help reduce ambient temp by 1-4'c depending on casing air flow.
worst case scenario of high temp is that blue screen/artifacts appear. or if thermal cut-off fails, ur gpu fries.
