just count the number of edges on the oof highlights... the more blades, the rounder and smoother the highlight, and generally produce better bokeh...

Typical lens render out of focus area by smearing the blurry background/foreground objects. The STF does not blur and smear, it just deeply blur them out, without the need of having very thin depth of field.
