MIRI: The Sarawak Archery Team recently bagged two gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals at the State Emerging Talents Carnival 2017.
Organised recently by Unit Sukan Prestasi Tinggi Negara (USPTN) in Perlis, the carnival aimed to enhance and raise the performance level of the athletes and encouraged the spirit of sportsmanship among the participants.
The archery team was led by USTPN Sarawak coach Ricky Yee, who praised the archers for their high level of performance during the competition.
He was impressed by the fact the Miri team achieved these results with less than a month spent in training.
The six archers who represented Sarawak at the carnival were in Yee’s USPTN training programme.
On the first day of the competition, Cindy Lim won the first gold medal for Sarawak in Individual Girls Under 13 Ranking Round category, while Liu You Jie won the first silver medal in Individual Boys Under 13 Ranking Round.
On the second day, Cindy once again came in first in Individual Girls Under 12 Match Round category and You Jie added to the silver medal haul from the Individual Boys Under 12 Match Round, while Liu You Wei contributed the bronze medal from the Individual Boys Under 15 Match Round category.
Sarawak’s second bronze medal was earned through the Boys Under 15 Team Event represented by You Wei, Hanson Lim and Adam Aiman. Cindy also won the Under 13 Girls best archer in this tournament.
Yee said competitions are a great way for archers and coaches to learn from mistakes and failures and to continue improving themselves.
Good sportsmanship promotes a positive attitude and his advice for archers is to have the courage to accept challenges and continue to strive for self-improvement.
Yee said children can start from as young as eight years old to train under the USPTN programme.
