KUCHING, May 16 — Some Bumiputera contractors in Sarawak are unhappy over the awarding of contracts in the Pan Borneo Highway project, said Christopher Gira Sambang (BN-Tamin) at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly sitting.
He alleged the subcontractors were totally at the mercy of the main contractors when the phase one of the project stretching from Tanjung Datu in Sematan to Kuala Baram in Miri was awarded for 12 packages.
“The government must look into the issue urgently to avoid further unnecessary public concern,” he said in his debate speech on the motion of thanks for the Yang Di-Pertua Negeri’s address at the sitting here today.
On another matter, Gira said since the construction work started in middle of 2016 many fatal accidents had occurred along the Pan Borneo Highway especially the stretch from Sibu airport junction to Pekan Arip Balingian.
Thus, he called on relevant authorities on road safety to put up more warning signs and carry out maintenance works on the road surface of the highway. — Bernama
